Biography
After Kyla sang, Zack Werner (Canadian Idol Judge) stated, “That’s the single best vocal performance we’ve had since we went across the country as far as I’m concerned”.
Combining her small town charm, big city ambition, alluring voice and unique writing style, Kyla Sandulak is cutting a path for herself in Canadian music. Since her completion of the Vocal Performance and Composition Programs at Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan College, Kyla has successfully worked her way into Canada’s performing and recording scene. Having entertained audiences since the day she could speak, she knew that her love of the stage and her passion for singing and writing were much more than a hobby.
Kyla has had the opportunity to share stages with many great Canadian artists such as Tom Cochrane, Colin James, Tal Bachman, Captain Tractor, The Tommy Banks Band, and so many others who have inspired and encouraged her. In 2004, she was a finalist on CTV’s Canadian Idol. Idol judge Zack Werner stated that Kyla’s was the best vocal performance he had witnessed across the country. It is no surprise that her voice, one so filled with energy, unique tones and raw emotion would strike such a statement.
From 2003 until 2008, Kyla was a member of the corporate band, The Top Ten (formerly the Kit Kat Club) led by Dave Babcock, and was also involved in many musical projects under the direction of George Blondheim, including the Oiler’s Homecoming and the Mark Messier tribute gala. Perhaps her favourite and most cherished ongoing project, however, is her own original one.
Kyla released her first original pop album, Would You Know, in 2004 and was excited to release her second album, This Record, in June 2007. The album, generously funded by Rawlco Radio, produced by Vancouver’s Misha Rajaratnam, and featuring the brilliant musicianship of some of Canada’s finest (Darcy Phillips, Sandro Dominelli, Russell Broom, David Sinclair, Miles Hill, and many others), is a collection of Kyla’s newest original material. Within 10 days of the album’s release, the first single, Beautiful Man, was the number one requested song on Edmonton’s Magic 99. Recently, as a singer songwriter, Kyla was featured as a musical guest on Access Television, Canadian Learning Television, and CTV’s Good Morning Canada.
Kyla is an engaging, striking young talent. Her compassion, humour and strength, her struggles and experiences, are the core of her heart, of which she generously bares to all with each song she writes and sings. CTV’s Ben Mulroney said it best, “Looks, charm, a killer voice – is there anything that Kyla doesn’t have?” And he was only brushing the surface.
